Egregious to Magnificent

Remember the house renos I talked about forever ago?  Well Hubs and I finally got started on that.  The dull builders beige wall colour in the walk-in closet has been replaced with clean white....the room suddenly seemed 5 times bigger.  The bedroom is now Marble White and the new Maple Rio hardwood floor looks AMAZING...good-bye stuffy, heat-trapping, dull, crappy carpet!!   I would have preferred all the carpet to be gone in the entire house, but I consider this to be a little victory and one day it will be gone!

We did the painting ourselves, which wasn't nearly as bad as painting over plaster walls and 15 layers of wallpaper in our old house (no joke!)   We hired a flooring company to install the hardwood and they did a great job, finished it in 1.5 days.  So worth it!

So here's the before, which looks absolutely hideous now:

                                   Egregious

                                   Magnificent

I picked out these Martha Stewart closet organizers from Home Depot for my walk-in....which will look a bit like this:

Say what you want about Martha, but this closet will be custom.

I will post more photos once the rest of the bedroom is finished, we have some items on order right now.  But already the bedroom feels like a whole new room!

Next up, the basement.

  1. Love the seriously sexy dark colour you chose for the floorboards. Very sultry against the white walls. x

  3. LR This is gorgeous! Love the wall color and the floors look so pretty with the white. I was planning on painting our beige walls white this Summer and didn't get it done. You are inspiring me even more with your lovely photos. Isn't it great what a huge difference what a few changes make? it is so worth doing!
Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Paint and floors make a huge difference, as do re-arranging furniture in a room. We moved our bed to a new spot and now there's all this "new" room!

  4. Wow! What a huge difference a little paint made. I must show my husband as I have been begging for a new interior paint job. We are long overdue.
Looking forward to seeing how the closet looks when it's complete.

  5. I also am not a fan of carpet - that hardwood floor looks beautiful. Love the idea of all that storage in a walk-in closet. My entire house is painted white, (except for one wall) and it makes the place look brighter and more spacious.

    1. Some people think white is boring and it reminds them of bland 1980s house designs but I love whites!

  6. Hello:
What an amazing transformation. You must indeed be very thrilled and, since we live without any carpets here in Budapest, we think the wood floor is very much a move in the right direction.

  7. Oh it's beautiful. I put carpets back in all of the bedrooms five years ago and love it as it's really cosy and I like sitting on the floor, but they are such a pain to keep clean. Your floorboards are beautiful too, mine are ancient warped old things.

    1. Most things are hard to keep clean! My friend has one of those Roomba vacuum cleaners, I'm kind of tempted to try one.

  8. The hardwood floors and lighter walls are a gorgeous combo. I am not a fan of carpet...in my house. Meaning, I like carpet, enjoy its warmth and squishiness in other homes, but in mine I keep the wood floors bare. I don't even use area rugs (except a small one in the guest room and my husband has one in his office area to protect floor from rolling around on it).

I never cared for Martha until she did time. Then I thought she was pretty cool.

  9. Wow - it is a great transformation. I love wood floors, but they simply aren't practical in an old house in a cold and damp place; it would be drafty. Also, we live in a semi-detached (attached to the house next door). The new neighbour removed all her carpets, not that I've ever seen her house. It's just I can hear her walking around. Carpets are good sound proofing as well, it seems. Good job she's not there very often. I pray they won't sell to a noisy family with loads of kids... Anyhow, your house is looking much fresher! PS I must be a robot, this is my 4th try (fingers crossed).

  10. Your room looks fabulous and I like the dark wood. You did a great job painting the walls and that is a big saving.

    Enjoy and thanks for sharing

    1. We actually enjoyed painting our room as the walls have only been painted over once. Benjamin Moore paint with the primer in it is really the best, we've found.

  11. well done, I love it!! I did the floor in the walk-in at Flintstone Towers in plain untextured ceramic white tiles, the largest I could get to avoid a proliferation of grout lines. The only reason I haven't moved on to MS organizers is that our Home Depots never have all the pieces I want at once. I'm always afraid of buying part of something and then finding out that the system or the remaining pieces have been discontinued.

    1. We were lucky, our Home Depot (which is conveniently located exactly 2 minutes from our house) had all the pieces we wanted for the closet, so we scooped them up that day, filled the car full of boxes and drove home. Luckily it wasn't a far drive!

  13. How gorgeous and fresh it all looks in there. I absolutely love dark floors with light walls. I also love that word egregious, I had never heard it heard in all my 15 years in London - it must be a fabulous Californian word and I'm going to slip it into my conversation today (even if its to the puppy, who basically is the only one who listens to me...)

    1. Isn't egregious a great word! I first heard Joan say it on Mad Men and then Hubs and I sometimes change the word "Magnificent" to "Egregious" while singing U2's "Magnificent" song in the car, it just seems to work...so that's how this blog got its name. I should give Hubs credit too. lol

  14. It really is remarkably satisfying to renovate a home or a room. A fresh lick of paint does wonders and I'm sure you will be happy with a revamped walk-in robe...every girls dream!
