This Week

Just checking in with everyone!  Some housekeeping notes to address:

Hubs put together the bookshelf I first mentioned here, we have it set up in our guest bedroom:

Hubs decided to even things out and put some of his books on the shelf (after I assembled mine, of course) .... he claims there has to be more varied reading material for guests instead of all girly books.  Probably a good idea.  :)

On Friday night, Hubs and I are going to a concert of Baroque music (one of my favorite music eras).  I always try to incorporate some music history in the music lessons I teach to my students.  I find music history fascinating.  It helps the kids to know who the composers of music are, their styles, which country they come from, etc.   I recently attended a music workshop given by a piano teacher and lecturer, she discussed the various ways kids learn (audio, visual, tactile, kinaesthetic, combination modality).  After the workshop, I was able to identify how my students learn music based on their strengths and I have adapted their lessons accordingly to address some of the weaker areas (still a work in progress!)  The kids are doing really well though - they even know what bel canto and con fuoco mean.  (These kids are smart!)

Our Mad Men Theme Party is on Sunday, can't wait!

It will be a simpler party - appetizers, dinner, visiting and watching the premiere episode with friends, but definitely will be fun nonetheless.  I will report on the festivities afterwards!

Thanks again to all who take the time to read and comment on this little blog of mine.  A special mention to all the fab bloggers who feature my blog on their blog rolls/reading lists....thanks so much dears!  xx

  1. Well I for one am delighted to feature you on my blog roll! Oh how I would love to come to your Mad Men party - it sounds great fun. I look forward to the photos. And as for Baroque music, it is also one of my favourites, and is quite wonderful background designing music, I find. Enjoy your party!

    1. Thanks Virginia, we will! Shall be a great weekend. I find Baroque music is great for cleaning and writing too (to have playing in the background). Bach and Handel just help me figure things out sometimes!

    1. Thanks! We have another bookcase in our basement (in the same espresso brown) for all our other books and records. The shelves are really quite sturdy, we are impressed with the quality.

    1. Thanks dear! oh the books have been restyled a few times now....LOL I teach music part-time and I am involved with a few other accompanying gigs for piano/organ. Keeps me pretty busy but it's worth it!

  4. Hello:
Always a good idea to provide guests with a wide range of reading material in their rooms but do they, we wonder, ever take a book off the shelves?

How splendid to be off to a Baroque music concert and we love the idea that you teach some music history in with the music lesson. Tonight we are at a concert of our favourite violin soloist, and another on Saturday. Such good times!

    1. I do have to wonder if people leaf through the books...I am sure my in-laws will be perusing the books though, my mother-in-law loves to read....they are staying at our place during Easter so we are preparing already!

      Enjoy the concerts!

    1. Oh you must! Or you can rent them from the library too. I would start with Season 1 as you have to know all the backstories by the time you get to Season 4 (and now Season 5).

  7. You are welcome...for the listing and reading. You make both a joy. Love the bookshelf. I have no idea how one lives without such a necessary, functional item. I have been thankful that my current house and my previous both had great built-ins.

You sound like a wonderful teacher...wich all could be as intuitive and pro-active as you are.

Have a great Mad Men party--what a hoot! Can't wait to read more about it. I would love to wear that green dress pictured above. ~~Bliss

    1. Thank you for the compliment Bliss! I really like teaching kids, it is a challenge but a good challenge. I love it when kids master things one day that they couldn't do (or think they couldn't do) a week ago. I also accompany some of my friend's singing students for recitals.

We have managed to find some great shelves. So much better than books sitting in boxes or stacked on the floor!

  8. I wish my music teacher was like you. If she had even one morsel of your passion and regards for her students, I'm sure I would've stuck to it. Believe it or not, I've heard so much about Mad Men yet I haven't watched it. Must do so soon.

    1. Thank you for your comment and kind compliment, it made my day! :) I think it's really important to have enthusiasm for whatever subject you are teaching because kids remember it and it makes it more interesting for them. I try to make the music history, ear training, sight reading, etc fun for the kids too.

As with Sulky Kitten, start watching Mad Men with Season 1! It's not like Days of our Lives where you can pick up the show years later and it's pretty much the same as when you left it....LOL

  9. That is a really great bookcase - so much more interesting that just a bunch of straight across shelves. I seem to be reading as much non-fiction these days as I do fiction, so the variety of choice would be appreciated if I were visiting! Look forward to seeing your next Mad Men party - I remember the last photos were a real hoot!

    1. Thanks! We really like it too, I like unusual furniture but it still has to practical for our needs.

I love reading autobiographies & biographies, that is my favorite genre right now.
