Mad for Hats

I love a good hat.  Hats are making waves these days and hopefully society as a whole will start wearing hats more often (besides ball caps).  I hope Don Draper continues wearing his hat into Season 5 of Mad Men.

It appears Rachel Menken (...one of my favorite characters from the entire series and possibly Don's best match to date...) won't be making a guest appearance on Mad Men anytime soon, however Matthew Weiner has been known to reintroduce characters in later seasons, so maybe there is hope?  Rachel sported one of the most memorable Mad Men hats seen below during Season 1:

Another memorable hat seen below, worn by Jane Sterling while visiting Roger at the office and "catching up" with Joan:

Not to be outdone by that wench Mrs. Sterling #2, Christina Hendricks upped the ante during a spread for LA Times Magazine.   These photos are stunning:

Stevie Nicks has included hats and berets in her concert wardrobe repertoire since the beginning of her singing career.  Here are some of the most memorable looks:

Let's not forget Pippa:

I've always loved hats with a veil:

If I was getting married this year, I would probably wear something similar to this:

Are hats included as part of your wardrobe?  Do tell!

  1. Just delightful! Isn't it funny we were both obsessing about hats at the same time! I remember that gorgeous hat from season 1 of MM. It's a beauty. Perhaps you and I can lead the charge from both sides of the oceans and bring the jolly hats back to everyday (glamourous) fashion. I wear a lot of hats - mostly vintage ones - and am surprised by how much people comment about them, but don't have the confidence to wear them themselves, except for special occasions. Which is largely at the races in Melbourne, as we are a little fashion/hat crazy at this time of year.

    Gorgeous post!

  2. Hello:
Even during times when hats have completely fallen from favour, we have continued to wear them, not only for particular occasions, such as weddings, funerals and for church, but as part of daily life.

Those who seldom wear them always look uncomfortable in them and, we have noted, remove them at the first possible opportunity. As for baseball caps, they are, in our view, unspeakable.

  3. I went into Brora last week to try on the hat they have online just now - oh boy, I look atrocious in hats!
I love Christina Hendricks chin and jawline, it's so sculpted.

  4. I love hats and I wear them often, especially when the weather cools. From classic Burberry check to Ugg shearling buckets and everything in between, hats are a necessity here in Canada. I loved the maple leaf hat the Duchess wore on their recent trip. How could we not love those two young ambassadors with such style and grace?

A member of my husband's extended family has taken to wearing a fedora. It looks good on him but he is now wearing it with absolutely everything, even board shorts. Of course now it no longer has the same panache it first did and there are whispers about a bald spot. I'll give him points for trying and a bit of sympathy if he is losing his hair already and struggling with that. At least he's not wearing a ball cap.

  5. I wear a straw bucket hat during the summer and in the winter, I wear a wool beret or if it's really cold, a shearling hat. But I have yet to wear an "occasion" hat that is meant to accessorize an outfit. I can just see my daughter sitting/stepping on it or picking off the decorations!

I also really liked the character of Rachel Menken on Mad Men. And Christina Hendricks has such a fabulous face and figure!

  6. I wear hats in the winter, have since I was a little girl but back then, in the dark ages, everyone wore a hat.
I just really have to catch up on Mad Men, everyone who talks about it loves it.

  7. Blue Fruit - Thanks dear, your hats post was splendid! That is great you wear hats often, I
    intend to wear more!

Hattatts - you two are fantastic! I loathe ball caps, I see too many people who insist on wearing them day in and day out.

Tabitha - Christina Hendricks is so pretty! And I disagree with your assessment about how you look in hats! :)

xoxo - I loved everything Kate wore on the Canada trip! Will looked great too. I must find a good winter hat or two for our lovely prairie winters, I'm sure you can relate. Funny story about the family member, I am sure you are correct with your assessment. I give him points for trying too, just as long as it doesn't venture too much into Joey Jeremiah territory! he he

Louise - Christina Hendricks looks amazing, I wish she would wear more Joan styles for the red carpet, it suits her so well. You'll have to find a great kid-proof hat! lol

Annie - Oh do watch Mad Men! I just love the show. Most of the hats worn on the show are amazing, I wonder where Janie Bryant (the costume designer) finds them all!

  9. I'm definitely a hat person. I'm glad other people are starting to embrace them too! Those photos you posted of Christina Hendricks are fabulous. I saw them just after they were published and saved them on my computer for makeup inspiration. Notice you didn't feature Princess Beatrice's royal wedding hat, lol!

  10. Steffys - thanks for stopping by! Those hats are amazing, I think my favorite is Christina Hendricks' blue hat (2nd photo)

Laura - Glad to hear it! Oh yes oops I forgot to post Princess Beatrice's antler hat. Too notorious!

  12. Thank you so much for including the photographs of "Joan." I've never seen her look so beautiful, although she's clearly alway beautiful. Always.

I adore hats and always have a number at my fingertips. Wide brim ones are my favorites.

  14. I love hats! My head is larger than "1 size fits all" so I don't have many in my closet. Looking to splurge on a fedora this season but will have to go to a proper hat shop to get fitted. Thanks for the inspiration! Are you as upset as I was when you found out MM won't be coming back for another yEAR!?!? I miss Don and the crew. Can't wait to see what shananigans they're up to in the next season...

  15. CC - I had a little snit going on there for awhile, I'm not going to lie! My summer premiere party plans had to be put on hold until next March, what a boring time of year! lol
